Around 7.2m tpa of food and drink are wasted in the UK, a lot of which could have been consumed. Unwanted in-date food such as tins of soup and beans or packets of rice and pasta that may have ended up in the waste bin are being collected at the Festival to help homeless and vulnerable people through the Cathedral Archer Project (CAP).

CAP supports Sheffield’s homeless and vulnerable people by providing them food, hygiene facilities, medical services and access to other support agency contacts such as shelter and accommodation. They see approximately 80-90 people every day and last year supported 1198 individuals. Donated food will be distributed as food parcels to those most in need.

Tracy Viner, Fundraising Manager, Cathedral Archer Project said, “The support we receive from the public is so valuable. The food parcels we give to rough sleepers are made up from the donations we receive and are a lifeline to many of our clients”.

Lynne White, Communications Manager, Veolia Environmental Services’ Sheffield said, “Most of us have the odd tin or packet of food lying around in our cupboard that we probably never get round to using. Rather than throw this food away, we are encouraging Sheffield Food Festival visitors to bring it with them so that we can give it to those in need.”

Donated food can be dropped off in charity boxes on Veolia Environmental Services’ stand on Fargate during the Food Festival.
