Sheffield City Council and Veolia recognised for Coronavirus response initiative at award ceremony

Sheffield City Council and Veolia have been recognised for their partnership approach to keeping the Household Waste and Recycling Centres in Sheffield open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

The independently judged Awards celebrate and reward organisations who work in a sustainable and responsible way. The Sheffield recycling and waste partnership team were shortlisted in the category: ‘Best project, campaign or initiative in response to the coronavirus pandemic’. A virtual awards ceremony took place on Friday 6 November where the winners were announced.

Being shortlisted for the award recognises the hard work and dedication to recycling and waste service provision for Sheffield residents and in particular it highlights the commitment of key workers across the industry during the pandemic.

Commenting on the award, Steve Newman, General Manager for Veolia Sheffield said:  “To be shortlisted for this award shows how our management and operational teams have made a real difference to the community they serve and keeping our HWRCs open set an example to the rest of the country. I’m pleased for the recognition of all our key recycling and waste workers for their exceptional performance during the pandemic.”

Councillor Mark Jones, Cabinet Member for Environment, Streetscene and Climate Change at Sheffield City Council, said: "With more people spending more time at home since the start of the pandemic, the demand for disposal of household waste has been huge. Thanks to our dedicated teams we’ve kept all our sites open throughout and we will continue to do so.

“These remain very difficult times and those working at our recycling centres are doing us all proud. We really appreciate the effort they have gone to, to keep the centres running and make sure our residents can safely get rid of their waste, also minimising the impact on our environment.

"I am so pleased that their hard work has been recognised by Let's Recycle. Being shortlisted for this national award is a fantastic achievement and highlights the significant contribution they have all made to our city during the pandemic."
