When visiting a HWRC it can be easy to forget that there are a lot of safety concerns and hazards.

Wearing the right clothing/shoes and being aware of our site rules means that you will have an easy visit and can recycle your items as quickly as possible.

ALWAYS:

  • Wear appropriate shoes
Shoes that keep your feet completely covered and are sturdy are the best shoes to wear so you don’t injure yourself. Shoes such as flip-flops, crocs or sandals are not suitable for visiting our site.
  • Wear clothes that cover your skin
You should always wear clothes that will keep you from grazing or cutting your skin, especially if you are handling items that are broken or unsafe.
  • Wear gloves for heavy and unsafe items
You can protect your hands and from hurting yourself when carrying large, heavy or broken items by wearing gloves. If you don’t have any, ask our staff for help.
  • Ask our staff for help
Our staff are on the site to give you any help you need. If you have a heavy item you can’t carry yourself, don’t know where something needs to go or anything else, you can always ask our people for help.
  • Leave pets and children under 16 in the car
Pets and children under 16 are NOT allowed out of the car at any of our sites. This is to keep them safe from other users and cars as well as the safety of other people on the site. If you need to bring them on your visit, make sure your car is secure so there are no unfortunate accidents.
  • Place items in the correct skip and don’t throw
Every skip is clearly marked to let you know where your items need to go. By placing items in the skip instead of throwing them, you reduce the risk for yourself and others of getting hurt or injured. If you are unsure of where to put your items, please ask a member of staff.
  • Check your car boot is shut before you leave
Unfortunately, we have had a lot of incidents of people leaving the site with their car boot open. This is very unsafe as things can fall out as you drive and you will hit the barrier with your car on the way out causing a lot of damage.

Materials brought to site will be reclaimed for either re-use or recycling wherever possible.

Please be aware that there are Height Barriers (1.8m/5'11") at all our Household Waste Recycling Centres and these sites are for the use of Sheffield residents and not for traders, who must use a properly licensed waste disposal site and satisfy Duty of Care legislation.
