This October, Sheffield City Council and Veolia are inviting you to Sheffield’s Wonder Day!
On Saturday 17th October, Veolia’s Waste Depot on Lumley Street will be open for visitors of all ages to take part in interactive activities, chat with the crews and learn more about waste and recycling across the city for FREE.
For this year’s Wonder Day, several tours to the control room at the Energy Recovery Facility will also be available to book in advance online. Please be aware the departure point of the control room tours is from the ERF car park.
At this year’s Wonder Day, you can expect to:
- Chat to the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Team about the potential dangers of putting batteries in the wrong bins
- Learn more about Sheffield’s Energy Recovery Facility and the role of the District Energy Network
- Have a throw at our recycling game and learn about what can be recycled in the city
- Learn how to reuse and repair clothing with Sheffield Clothing Repair +
- Use scrap material to get crafty with Scrap Dragon
- Play some tunes on our Junk Orchestra
- Take photos with our bin wagons and chat to our crews
- Enjoy a hot/cold drink from Really Awesome Coffee
Please be aware, the Lumley Street Depot and Control Room Tours require booking in advance. More information on what each ticket includes is shown on the EventBrite page.
The minimum age for the ERF tour is 12 years old. Anyone under 16 years old needs to be accompanied by an adult. All activities at the Lumley Street Depot are suitable for all ages.
Tickets to both parts of Sheffield’s Wonder Day are now available to book via the link at the top of the page.
On the day there will be a parking marshall at both sites, who can advise where to park.
Lumley Street Depot
There will be no parking along the access road of the depot on the day, so we recommend parking along Lumley Street.
Energy Recovery Facility
If you’re visiting the ERF for a tour, you are able to park on the ERF site during the tour. Once the tour has finished, you will need to move your car if you plan to visit the Lumley Street site afterwards. This is to allow space for others touring the ERF.
By Bus
The closest bus stop to the Sheffield ERF and Sheffield Depot is the stop on Cricket Inn Road/Bernard Road which is serviced by the number 24, 25, 71A and 95 buses. From this stop, it is a 8-10 minute walk to both sites.

By Tram

Yes, we have bike racks at both the Sheffield ERF and the Sheffield Depot. Please ensure to enter the sites using the pedestrian entrance.
There will be a drinks van available at the Lumley Street site on the day to purchase hot and cold drinks.
To access the Lumley Street event and the control room tours, you will be required to show your booking confirmation email from EventBrite. Visitors who are unable to show their booking confirmation will be unable to enter the site and/or tour.
